Create Halloween Decorations with Simple Materials

You don’t need much to get started with Halloween crafts. You may already have many of the things you need at home, such as toilet rolls, coloured paper, felt-tip pens, glue and string. Add a few autumn flowers or green foliage for an extra splash of colour and a touch of Halloween spirit. And of course, the kids can put their own spin on the decorations and make them as cute, silly or spooky as they like.

How to Make Them

1. Choose which Halloween character you want to make, for example Frankenstein’s monster, a ghost, a witch, a bat or a pumpkin.

2. Choose a paper colour to match your character. Cut the paper to fit around the toilet roll and glue it in place.

3. Leave the glue to dry for a little while so the paper stays securely in place.

4. Glue on googly eyes or draw your own with a felt-tip pen. Then add a mouth, teeth, scars or other fun details to give your character some personality.

5. Cut out details such as wings, ears, hair, a hat or a pumpkin stalk from coloured paper.

6. Glue the details onto the toilet roll and leave everything to dry.

7. Your Halloween character is now ready to play with or use as a decoration around the house!

Tip!

Make your Halloween characters even more playful with a few small cut flowers or twigs. Try roses, carnations or chrysanthemums in autumnal colours, for example.

Hanging Ghost Decoration

Halloween Ghost Wreath

Turn toilet rolls into cute little ghosts and let them float together in a floral Halloween wreath. The kids can paint and decorate their own ghosts, while an adult helps attach the flowers to the metal ring and put the wreath together. A fun Halloween craft to make together and a lovely decoration to hang up when you’re finished.

Materials

  • Empty toilet rolls

  • White craft paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Felt-tip pens

  • Scissors

  • Floral wire or a metal ring

  • Cut flowers and green foliage

  • Thread or string

How to Make It

1. Gently flatten the top of the toilet roll and trim it into a rounded shape to give the ghost a soft, round head.

2. Cut small points along the bottom of the toilet roll to create the ghost’s floating shape.

3. Paint the entire toilet roll white and leave it to dry completely.

4. Draw a cute, silly or spooky face with a felt-tip pen.

5. Arrange flowers or green foliage around the metal ring and secure them with thin floral wire. An adult may need to help with this step.

6. Attach string to the metal ring so the wreath can be hung up.

7. Carefully make two small holes opposite each other near the top of the ghost. Use a piece of wire, a needle or the tip of a pair of scissors to make the holes.

8. Thread a piece of string or wire through the holes and form a loop so the ghost can be hung up.

Tip!

Add small plastic pumpkins, spiders or other Halloween figures between the flowers. Let the kids choose their favourites and create their own spooky decoration.
